Instead of paying for an excursion, we chose to wander the port town of Messina on our own. Turns out that there was little to do, as it is August (many close up shop due to the heat, and go on vacation at this time of year), and the day we were docked was a holiday. But we wandered the city on our own anyways. It felt a bit like a ghost town with a bit of a seedy, worn down look, but we did find some lovely spots on our walk.
